There are a variety of places to study Arabic in Fes and there is an assortment of cultural programs offering foreigners insights into Islamic studies, artisanal craftsmanship and social programs (just to mention a few). But one place stands apart from the rest because it is owned and operated by a threesome of Moroccans who are passionate about sharing their unique Fassi heritage with the world and are dedicated to fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. That place is Subul-Assalam. (www.sacal-fez.com).
Anouar El Haitami, together with his sister, Maryam and her long-time friend Fatima Zohra Ben El Cadi, are the directors of Subul-Assalam. This dedicated trio seeks to educate the world about the beauties and fascinating culture of Morocco and they take particular pride in their hometown, Fes. They hope to help students cultivate a deeper understanding of Morocco’s fascinating culture — as well as the distinctly different culture found in the Imperial city of Fes. Their goal is to help students achieve a greater understanding of the heart in order to relate to the world at large with peace, acceptance and equanimity.
Subul-Assalam translates to “paths to peace”. Should you have the pleasurable opportunity to interact with those who work at the center, you will quickly understand they are the embodiment of their name.
There are many paths to peace and at Subul-Assalam there are many paths to take to on your journey to cross-cultural understanding. There are Arabic language courses, excursions, social aid programs, cooking classes, calligraphy classes — you name it and it will be organized. And programs can easily be customized to meet your individual needs. After all, no two people are alike in this world and Subul-Assalam is dedicated to walking hand-in-hand with anyone seeking to open their heart to the fascinating cultures within Morocco and helping seekers achieve a deeper understanding of this unique culture, of Islam, and of the seeker’s own heart.
