The Lands of Volubilia Wine

Christophe comes from a family of winemakers in the Bordeaux region of France. Today, he is carrying on the family tradition in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains in nearby Meknes.

Domaine de la Zouina is situated on 155 hectares of red earth in a biblical landscape where vineyards, olive orchards and cypress trees harmoniously co-exist. Here, Christophe directs the planting, the tending and the making of the winery’s sumptuous wines and award-winning olive oil.

But don’t let the romantic notions of wine and olive oil making and the beauty of the surrounding landscape and the sophistication of Christophe himself detract you from that he is a farmer – a farmer with mud on his boots, soil in his blood and wisdom of one who lives daily with the challenges, rewards and setbacks Mother Nature offers.

Looking around at the vast fields of rigorously trimmed vineyards and row upon row of olive trees, it’s difficult to absorb the fact that this is one of Morocco’s smaller wineries. But the makers of Volubilia wines have purposely kept their enterprise on a human scale and they care for each vine individually. The smaller yields enable them to pay careful attention to the detail and balance that the family has used throughout their long history of winemaking to produce some of the greatest Bordeaux wines.

Touring the fields in the rugged 4×4 Christophe drives around the vineyards is part of a wine-tasting tour that shouldn’t be missed if you living in or visiting Fes or Meknes.

Spring is an especially beautiful time to tour the winery but anytime of year illustrates another step in the long, patient process of winemaking and affords a unique opportunity to go into the fields with a charming and expert wine producer like Christophe.
